Colchester Zoological Society, cares for several of the most critically endangered animals on the planet, including Amur leopards and Bornean orangutans. Set within 60 acres of parkland and lakes Colchester Zoo is home to over 150 species. Every visit or online purchase to Colchester Zoo helps to contribute to supporting endangered species both within Essex and globally through conservation projects. Since opening in 1963, Colchester Zoo has provided education to visitors about protecting the weird and wonderful creatures of the world, as well as providing vital research that will help their counterparts in the wild.
Colchester Zoo also supports the UmPhafa Nature Reserve located in South Africa, dedicated to reintroducing game back to the once previous farmland used for cattle. UmPhafa is an official protected nature reserve and contributes towards the research of wild African animals and includes species such as buffalo, blesbok, ostrich, giraffe and zebra.
