Waterloo Uncovered

"Waterloo Uncovered (WU) is a registered UK charity that combines a world-class archaeology project on the battlefield of Waterloo with a support program for veterans and the military community. Working in partnership with some of Europe’s top universities, and through the unique perspective of a team of archaeologists, veterans, and serving soldiers, WU aims to understand war and its impact on people — and to educate the public about it.

WU's flagship programme offers veterans the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations at the site of the Battle of Waterloo, where Napoleon faced his final defeat in 1815. Through hands-on involvement in uncovering historical artifacts, veterans gain a sense of purpose, camaraderie, and accomplishment. All WU programmes leverage aspects of the history and archaeology of Waterloo in different ways to improve wellbeing, provide skills development, reduce loneliness, and provide beneficiaries with a sense of achievement and improved self-confidence. Beneficiaries are an integral part of our work and our team for a 12-month period; from the application stage right through to the group reunions that conclude the programmes.

Moreover, Waterloo Uncovered fosters a supportive community where veterans can share their experiences, build connections, and receive the assistance they need to transition back into civilian life. The charity also conducts research and educational outreach, shedding light on the human experiences of war and promoting greater understanding and empathy. Since 2015, we have supported over 300 VSMP find peace from war, and with your help we can help hundreds more!"
